Types of Insomnia

Insomnia is one of the most widely recognized sleep disorders. It can occur in both adults and children. Insomnia may recognize as difficulty sleeping, falling asleep or the inability to stay asleep. A lack of sleep can severely affect your work performance, as well as your personal life leading to a lack of vitality. There are five types of insomnia.

1. Acute insomnia

Acute insomnia is usually described as a brief episode of difficulty sleeping usually caused by stress or some other life event. It may be caused by work problems, an encounter with a friend or family member or after receiving bad news. Quite often, once the issue has been resolved, acute insomnia goes away without needing medical treatment.

2. Chronic insomnia

Chronic insomnia is described as a long-term pattern of difficulty sleeping. A person may have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep for at least three nights per week for a period of three months or longer. Chronic insomnia may be caused by often a person may have a history of sleeping problems.

3. Comorbid insomnia

Medical conditions can also attribute to insomnia. Comorbid insomnia occurs when a patient has a medical condition such as anxiety or depression. Other conditions such as back pain or arthritis can contribute to being unable to sleep through the night.

4. Onset insomnia

Onset insomnia is described as the inability or difficulty to fall asleep at night. It may take a person 20 minutes or longer to fall asleep.

5. Maintenance insomnia

Those suffering from maintenance insomnia usually have the inability to stay asleep after waking in the night and are unable to return to sleep. If you think you may be suffering from a form of insomnia, it is important to seek help from your General Practitioner or Sleep Physician as soon as possible as there are several different treatments.
